The 2008 USA P-Bass I just bought came with EMG-HZ on it and I left them on to try them out. The originals were in a bag and I have some pups from the early 80s to try also. They are very different to the Fenders but I'm getting used to them also. They are brighter (maple neck & board) and my eq graphic remains pretty flat across the board and it sounds pretty decent. I'm bi-amping a Yorkville 2x10 with a Yorkville 1x15 using a yorkville 400b and a Yorkville 200b. The 2x10 is rippin fairly well so I put it under the 15" and I like what I'm hearing. So the HZ's stay for now, once I hit some different rooms I might be swayed to get the Fender pups to work but you never till you try. One application works well for someone and they same set up doesn't cut for someone else, its all good if your happy. Doc

How autonomous are EMGs?

Here it is in a nutshell: EMG's will sound like whatever you put them in and with.
Using a standard preamp, EMG's have a pretty wonderful sound and seems to match things acoustically with whatever you have them in. People say in this situation they color the sound, but I believe it is the opposite and what most people experience is colored sound from other pickups. All it does in this situation is bring forth what is already there.
BUT paired with a filter pre-amp, and it is a whole 'nother ball game kids. The EMG 35DC will do it all.You get uber subby bass (you should here them though with my Bag End ELF to super high glass ambient stuff. Every time a twiddle a knob in the ACG pre amp I get a different tone, a different feel and I have to reconsider what I accept as prime sonic landscape.
