ive been transcribing this, but i cannot for the life of me figure out what mullarkey is doing at the end of this fill:

been messing around with whatever i can think of with the high c but i can't come anywhere close. what the heck is he doing?

“I don't know but it has a good beat, and you can dance to it. I'd give it an 85.”

at 3:36 there is a bass fill that ends on like a chord or something? like i said i cant really figure out what exactly is happening. its the last thing he plays in that fill, right before the sax enters again

When you say "effect" do you mean processing, or do you mean impression?

If you mean processing: there is none (that I can hear, at least).

If you mean impression: the bass walks up, and then does that high fill from G# to F - over which there is a guitar with a phaser effect (which may be what your ear is picking up as a bass effect), and the chord you're hearing is from the electric piano blending with the bass.

thanks for your suggestions all! ill have more to experiment with when im back home in a few days now.

i suppose i mean impression in that case, certainly not processing. im hearing the e-piano but im not hearing it on the same beat as the alleged chord im talking about. i am hearing the guitar, but it sounds too thin/ghostnote-y to be the cause imo

Try sticking that little section in something like Moises, or UVR, to separate it out into stems.

The AI is pretty terrible in my experience (certainly with regards to any creative music where the instruments don't stay in their "traditional" lanes ; but seems to be passable for pop, and meat & potatoes rock), but it can reveal information you might not pick up in the full mix - albeit spat out in the incorrect stem.

You have to scrutinise the results, and use your better judgement, as I've witnessed some pretty glaring errors, either with the AI interpolating a best guess, or simply hallucinating something that isn't there.

Playing the lick in the high octave with a pick and an octave down doubler, or playing it down and overdubbing a guitar on top.

Think I have it. For the sake of convenience I transcribed it in tab. The fill starts after beat three. It’s either dubbed with guitar an octave higher. or he is using an octaver. So I made two versions. But I think it is the first one with the guitar dub. Let me know what you think.

I haven't used Tab (or any notation) since about 1993, so I'm super rusty - but that top version doesn't quite correspond with what I'm hearing (for example the E-string 8th fret, I'm not hearing at all).

The lower version - with the octaver - makes no sense to me, based on what I think I'm hearing.

If I get a chance this evening, I'll record what I think is being played - though just the bass, as I can't be arsed to do the Rhodes, or transcribe the guitar to keyboard guitar samples (I don't own a guitar), but it might be quite late as I've got a Grand Prix, and a World Cup Final to watch tonight, before some idiot blurts out the results.

Ok, interesting…

When I actually sat down with a bass in hand, I realised that the fill is slightly different from what I thought I’d heard (without a bass available, just figuring it out in my head).

I decided it would make sense to put it in some context, rather than just focus on the fill, and when I looked at the lead-in, that’s when I found the E-string 8th fret that @Les Fret had put in his Tab version.

In short, I think the bass is played straight, but part of that fill briefly uses an Octaver effect (sub-octave - ie an octave below the notes played).

The Octaver I had to hand didn’t have remotely the same tone, but you get the idea.

The file I’ve attached is the loop cycling through three times :

1) the original segment

2) the original segment + my interpretation overdubbed

3) just my interpretation

Also annoying, having now scrutinised it, I recorded my Precision, but there are a couple of telltale signs that lead me to believe it was originally recorded with a StingRay - if I’d spotted that sooner, I would have recorded with my StingRay.

Anyway, mp3 attached.

Ha!

I just listened back to this, and I'm now convinced that the first part of the fill (that has the octaver) is actually played an octave lower - and that if there is an octave used, it's octave UP (which is not an effect / plug-in that I have, so if I redo that, I'll have to figure out some non-realtime pitch shifting).
