A friend sends me a link..."You like Dream Theater, you like Porcupine Tree.... you should check THESE guys out."

Jeezus.

These guys are INCREDIBLE. Very impressive, and I love the songwriting style. Some times I'm late to catch on, (i'm 67, I got an excuse) but I'm definitely impressed. That bassist is a monster talent.

I really dig them and I'm late to the party too. I was never a fan of "growl" vocals but Akerfeldt just does it so well. I like the post growl stuff too.
What are ‘must hear’ Opeth songs?
IMO, Blackwater Park, Ghost Of Perdition, To Rid The Disease, Demon Of The Fall, Ending Credits, Windowpane, and Harlequin Forest are good songs to start with.

Opeth's run from Still Life (my favorite, it's etched into my brain) through Ghost Reveries is probably my favorite music out there.

Even if you don't like metal, they are the (imo) top act out there as far as combining beauty and brutality. Definitely agree that Blackwater Park is the safest point of entry, if you're at all ok with metal. If you want the clean proggy stuff, check out Damnation and Pale Communion. And yes, Martin grooves on bass, even in very intense sections.

I listened to them quite a bit back in the mid 90 when they were a more straightforward death metal band. I remember them as a decent band but nothing exceptional compared to many other death metal bands at the time. They've certainly evolved quite a bit since then, both musically and technically, and they've also replaced several of their band members. I haven't listened much to their newer stuff to be honest but I've liked it a lot. Their older albums are really just for fans of old school death metal IMO.

Theyre great! Their discography has many shifts in genre so its worth checking out the different eras to see where your preference fits with the sliding scale of death metal to classic rock/stoner metal/jethrocore. I was a fan from Blackwater through Heritage, then they shifted to old school 70s metal for me. Still great music. Saw them when Cynic opened for them in 2008 on Cynics big comeback tour/album cycle.

Also check out "Storm Corrosion", an acoustic colab with Steven Wilson from Porupine Tree. Also, the new Porcupine Tree album is great.

They're not my favorite metal band but I think they are major song writers.
They can come up with catchy and melodic tunes while sticking to their progressive metal roots.
It is a difficult art. Tool is the only other one I can think of.
If you are in a metal band, cover Opeth. They deserve it and the audience will thank you.
