How do I get rid of Sax player?

I am in a 5 piece grunge/alternative band. There's the usuals you'd find in a band, but we have a mate that plays the saxophone, and all being tight friends, he was no doubt going to be in our band from the start.. We're all nice people (Apart from me being the only girl and getting grumpy at everyone) and we dont really want to hurt his feelings and just kick him out, because he didnt do anything wrong.. its just that he's making us sound like absolute crap and it just doesnt suit our genre.

Yesterday we had our first gig (just doing covers) with other bands and we thought he would be fine because at the practices, we never really heard any of his sax.. So we were doing the sound check before we started and he told the sound guys to turn his mic up and we sounded great, but he completely turned it into a disaster..

Hes our good mate and i just don't know how to tell him he can't be with us anymore, he thinks it sounds good but it really sounds terrible. Sax player in a grunge band? Pfffffft!

Brian Ferry had a huge successs with an oboe player. Why don't you create a new genre with the sax players? Can he play keys? Then, he could add some nice texture to your music.

Try recording your shows or rehearsals and then everyone listen together and discuss.

Ah thats a good idea but hes pretty much improvising every song.. and we arn't even close to thinking of originals.. this is like having random honks of c# in Today by Smashing Pumpkins.. i could really see into trying something else though..

Im going to hit him over his head with that ruddy instrument if he doesnt get the right music for any of the songs soon.

Seriously, talk to him/with him. If you all don't think the band should have a sax, then tell him. If it's something about his playing, then work it out. Make it better or cut the slack. If he was your mate before and played accordion or bagpipes, would he be in the band? Either make the sound your own, or decide to conform to a pre-existing 'sound' and tell him he's not part of it.

^ this could be a contributing factor..maybe he can't really hear himself either.
Sax would not completely out of place in a grunge-ish setting. Think of Morphine.

But if he straight up sucks, then it's "we love you but, this isn't the band for you. Have beer on us."
