How do I get this bass tone?

Precision, pickstyle, near the bridge, treble cut and high mid boost (800hz or 1 Khz, well .... you certainly guess )

I had to play Echoes recently for a Pink Floyd tribute band, and I had a "similar" tone to play it pickstyle with a Jazz Bass on the neck pickup, so I guess that with a P it's a winner !

Ha... and a "medium-strong" pick , I play dunlop Jazz III it's really good for that kind of tone....

Mike probably used the rick for that recording. I think what you think is phasing is the natural Rickenbacker sound through the amp and mixed with a direct signal. As for the 2011 vid Jornacio doesnt ever sound like Mike did.

Get a Rickenbacker.

That's actually a Jaguar and it is definitely a great bass for that song. I play it with neck P'up solo'd and finger style which is brighter than a pick thanks to some serious calluses. I love the Mint green Pickguard on my Jag but that Black one looks killer against the Hot Rod Red. It's fun to Play on the Jag which is basically a Jazz on steroids But The RIC is where it's at.

+1. But, they just don't sound right now without Mike Mesaros. Also, IMO, the song doesn't sound as good to me if it's not played in Eb tuning. It needs the darker sound.

Thanks all. At the audition I will play it with a pick and use my American Jazz Standard

Yep I think that the best thing is to do is: know your part, have a nice tone, be cool with the other guys and you win ! If you play it pickstyle on a jazz, just work your EQ and you'll get a decent tone I guess.

If you do not have the exact same tone, I don't think that's a real problem. I had this advice from Stefan Redtenbacher recently: assume that you know your part, the rest will follow.

He wasn't wrong: the Pink Floyd tribute band I've been auditionning for called me back this afternoon to work with them next friday, so....
