Double Bass How do I get this sound, besides being Ron Carter?

I bring this up any time I hear (or see) someone talking about Buster's "amped" sound. I heard SPHERE at the Vanguard when Buster's amp kept crapping out and finally just shut down. The quality and timbre of of his sound didn't change, there was only a slight drop in volume. That sound ain't coming from the pick up....

I got the chance to see Buster here in St.Louis. His sound is in his hands, ears, head, and heart. He did a clinic and a concert that week. Great sound great playing.
When I heard Bister at a the a the ISB convention at Colorado State either they did not have a clue how to properly send Busters sound FOH or
something was faulty with the pickup on the bass Buster was playing that night. It was like listening to the sound of nails on a chalkboard. So there are times when
the sound coming from the pickup isn’t the sound in the players ears.

As you point out, perhaps we should all try to avoid drawing over generalized conclusions .
