How do YOU deal with tailgaters?

This is the only point of this whole thread that I am trying to get across. I you are on a single lane road, or in any lane but the far left lane on a highway, and you are going the speed limit or greater, than I have no problem. If you are in the far left lane of the highway and you are going slower than somebody else, it is common courtesy to move over. Not doing so as the thread starter insists on doing is just as rude as obnoxious as the person tailgating.
Agreed completely. People that block the fastlane shouldn't be.

I've heard that in a rear-end accident, it's never the fault of the driver in front. (This may be an urban legend, but I have heard it.) Based on this, I've often fantasized about just slamming on my breaks and letting them plow into me. If they live, I'll take 'em for everything they've got.

Of course, I'd rather do this with a Mercedes crawling up my rear than a Ford Escort. :p

Fantasies aside, I usually just try to get out of the way. I always enjoy it when, a couple of minutes later, I pass the idiot as he's pulled over, getting a ticket... :D

Every insurance company will find both parties at fault to varying degrees. You are considered partially at fault even if your car is sitting in a parking lot, turned off with no keys inside and you are nowhere around...and someone hits you. Just because you parked it there.

Rolling road block. If I'm in the left lane and someone is tailgating me, I get right next to the person in the right hand lane and stay with them as long as I can.

I should clarify - not something I'd do on the interstate. Only in a 35 or under zone.

I'm usually camping at 75mph cuz I like my low insurance premiums. but when I'm in a hurry, 90mph is not unheard of.

But if I'm holding people up in the fast lane, I just jump over. If they're in a hurry, I'm gonna sympathise with them and let em get going.

However, if I'm in the middle lane (assuming three lanes) or even worse, the right lane, and you're close enough to see what the time is on MY cd player, then you're tasting my Class III trailer hitch. I have the LAW behind me that says if you rear-end someone, it is YOUR fault, no matter what. I've got a few dings and dents in my chrome rear bumper and I'm fine with that. Too bad for them. Everyone's got a plastic Tupperware bumper, and it sucks for them to get a hole punched through them cuz my truck's trailer hitch is about hood-ornament high. Heh heh.

And if you're one of those rally-racing wannabe posers trying to dart in and out of traffic with far too little room to be pulling those stunts, I'll see ya coming, and trap you behind a semi-trailer. It's even more fun with passengers cuz then they're all flipping the guy off and mooning them for me, as I match their speed as closely as possible.

If you're in a hurry, I understand, and will get out of the way. If you're a jerk and expect me to get outta the way simply cuz you don't wanna use the left lane for what it is intended for, then NO MERCY. And I will go well out of my way and inconvenience myself greatly for the sheer pleasure of making the stunt-driving rice-burners as pissed off as possible.

+100

That's the way to go at it :bassist:

Seriously, Geth the hell outta the way.

I like to give them a little love tap on their rear bumper. That really gets the message across. It's just courtesy. If you can't stand to go faster than 45, GO HOME!!

This subject really enrages a lot of people.

I will also bust second gear on the shoulder, and proceed to feed you my dust. A$$h*L3!

Slower traffic keep right. PASS ON THE LEFT. I don't care how fast I'm going in the left lane, if someone wants to go faster, they have the right of way, IMHO. I move over. I am in constant awareness of what is behind me.

I expect the same courtesy when I am moving at a higher rate of speed, and closing in from behind. People need to watch their mirrors.

Stop living in your own private Idaho at freeway speeds, it's completely ignorant to others. I usually use a left signal indicator to announce my presence before resorting to highbeams, which many seem to interpret as a provocation, for some inexplicable reason. It's not a race, now be polite, and stop obstructing the progress of others - MOVE OVER.

That said, if I can't move over because it's the car in front of ME that lacks this understanding of the laws of proper traffic flow, and the car behind me suddenly decides to crawl up my rear (as if the blame rests with me somehow for his obstruction), or I am in one of the right lanes, and someone with improper driving ettiquette or inherent problems with depth perception or lack of respect crawls up my rear, and violates my space, he may find himself the recipient of either 1) a full 4-wheel lockup or 2) [reserved only for the most deserving] a handbrake application.

The latter is, of course, all the more spectacular because it does not light the brake lights...thus removing at least 500-1000 milliseconds from the offender's reaction time, making for most interesting viewing in the mirrors.

I observe proper driving ettiquette. I demand the same in return. My patience in such matters is increasingly limited.

I guess competition racing can make you intolerant of the driving ignorant...

Reminds me of a guy who once didn't realize that my dads truck had a bumper a hell of a lot better than the front of his civic. Not to mention higher. We can't even tell he bumped the truck, but his hood was definitly screwed up royaly. That made my day.
I'd love for you to come "love tap" any any vehicle I drive. You'll be handing me an insurance card :).

i get annoyed when people in the fast lane aren't doing at least 80 or 85 so yeah i'm one you'd hate to have behind you. normally tho i'm more apt to just find a way around a slow ass fast laner
This is bad advice. It is illegal to drive that fast, not only are you being a danger to yourself and others in ajoining lanes, but you are seriously wasting fuel.. and to what end?

Hopefully you'll NOT learn this the hard way. Nothing is that important anyway that you need to drive so fast in the first place... just enjoy the ride and the fuel-savings too. :smug:

If someone's got the audacity to try and tailgate me, especially in this horrid U.P. winter weather (black ice, snow, poor visibility), then I'll slow down or brake check them until I'm either stopped or they hit me. I've got no problem collecting their insurance money to have my $300 hunk o' junk replaced.
