How do you feel about signature models?

Wouldn't some variety of Sadowsky 5 string work, too, as he was the person who did the mods to MM's Jazz Bass?
Oh they would. Thing is, I'm sixteen, and I can hardly pay for gas, so a Sadowsky is WAY out of reach. All things considered, I can probably safely say that the MM5 is as well, but I've seen them used at more reasonable prices. And then there's the fact that I'd still be buying the Sadowsky in order to get a Marcus vibe. I don't really see a difference there. But that's just me personally.
This thread was in no way set up to trash brands and thats why my original post did not say ANYTHING regarding certain brands that do it or how they market etc. I just wanted to know if any others felt the same way as i do.
Here's the thing. Guys who constantly have to complain about stuff like signature models simply can't be happy and constantly seek affirmation in their choice of gear.
I'm not going to let anyone else make me feel like a jackass. So I play what I want and anyone who doesn't like it can go to.... New Jersey for all I care. So, if I were to like an Elton John Signature pair of sunglasses, I will rock them. If I don't, I won't. What is cool or hip to anyone else means little or nothing to me.
That being said, I play a Fender Roscoe Beck Signature V as my main bass. I love everything about it. I will be buying another when I can find one. I play a lot of country gigs for hip young country artists (up and coming.... no big names). Many of them wish I would play a 4 string P bass because that is very hip (oddly enough) in Nashville right now. No thanks. They are great basses but not my thing.
I think one facet to people being turned off by them is that a lot of other musicians may view you as a "[Insert artist name] fanboy" who just got the bass because they want to be just like them in every way. I don't think that when I see one, but I know there are plenty of cats who have that kind of attitude. Bothers some people, doesn't bother others, whatever YMMV. A good bass, or a comfortable one rather, is a good bass and should be judged on its own merits. It does seem to cheapen a bass IMO when they have to plaster the name all over it or something else to let people know without a doubt that it's [Insert artist name here] signature model. A signature on the headstock is enough to get the point across IMO, I don't want a heartbat on my freakin bass lol

So, buy a nice MIM Jazz Bass and put an Aguilar OPB-2 in it, that should get you close enough.

Will it really? What always seems to give it that extra push to be really the sound I'm looking for is that half inch closer to the bridge that you get with that '70s spacing. I know Squier does a couple like that, but Fender, at least MexiFender, only does one, and it's a four.
Fair enough. It's just my opinion on sig models. I'm not judging anyone else who plays them, but I'm not going to buy one.
I may find the most comfortable t-shirt I've ever worn in my life, but if it has Green Day, Blink-182, or Geddy Lee's face on the front, I'm not going to wear it.

It's a complete non-issue to me. If it's a good instrument, it happens to meet my musical needs, it fits my budget, I like it and I can put it to good use, then I'll get it, play it, and enjoy it. Otherwise, I won't.
The fact that it happens to be spec'ed out for a famous player simply isn't relevant to me. If that player and I happen to have a good deal of instrument preferences in common, that's cool. But I wouldn't seek out any instrument, nor shun any instrument, simply on the basis of the fame of the player behind it.

I just think the whole argument is silly. If you didn't design and build the bass, just shut up and play it already.

When has a Fender Precision ever not been considered "very hip" in Nashville? Even from the moment the very first P Bass hit the very first Nashville studio in the early '50s?

Jerry Only gave me a couple of sets of his signature strings.
I never even opened the packages, I gave them to guys that I knew who were bigger Misfits fans than I.
I can't say whether they were any good or not.

I can't really say but I think there is a lot more to MM's tone than any single factor, plus no matter what, you will never sound like him, none of us will every really sound like our heroes/influences. In the long run you will always sound like you.
You are still pretty young so it's perfectly fine to go for that sound in your head/heart.
