Fat and round. Preferably an all valve amp giving that warmth, sustain, and natural compression. Enough upper mids to give a clear note definition. A bit of treble to catch the attack, but not too much to make it sound clanky.

Depends...whatever works in the context!
+1 to this.

I change my tone for each song.

I kinda think of clean bass tone in 4 basic stereotypes, P - boomy thick, J - brighter less boom, R - gritty and midrange, and Slap - mid scooped and bright.

I have a basic idea where to turn the knobs on my Alembic and where to move my right hand to get each, and I change them for the song. I always warn the sound guy that I change the bass tone through the set as far too many of them have only one single concept of what Bass sounds like and kinda leave it there all night. Lol.

Depends on what song we're covering, I don't have a signature sound. Personally I do prefer a somewhat neutral bass sound though, blend in rather than stand out. Maybe slightly more modern and growly J bass type rather than old school P bass thump.

...clear enough that the beginning and end of each note are crisp and defined, with a touch of fur around the edges to warm it up, and a low mid boost to rattle the sternum such that it's felt as much as heard......
