how do you move gear with a bad back?

http://www.handtrucks.com/hand-trucks/compact-luggage-hand-trucks/townsteelcompacthandtruck.cfm

I have this handtruck. Everyone who has seen it wants to know where I got it, etc. and a few have ordered. It is lightweight, foldable, carries alot, has a large volume on the bottom and does the job. I ordered it from www. handtrucks.com

That hand truck is a lifesaver.... I finally replaced my old, ratty handtruck I had for years with one of these and it's amazing. I haul my 2 2x10 cabs and supplies with it all the time. Usually 2 trips to the car gets everything in for the gig. I even had my entire setup (amp/cab/etc.), albeit a smaller rig, loaded onto it and trudged back and forth from a venue to my hotel in Nashville this summer. Handled the 100+ degree heat and hills just fine! ;-)

its kind of funny- i havent played live in while- and now- with the back- i got a jam/audition next saturday. the rental space well be using has amps/pa/etc- so i dont have to deal with transport just yet- which is nice.

as far as sound goes- its a reggae/rock/punk band- so id be using a couples synths- fuzzes- od- envelope filter- stuff like that- playing slap/finger. but- i need to be able to go fairly ambient as well- as im working on another thing along those lines.

currently- im using an eden 410xlt. after much thought- im not looking to replace it- but to complement it. i want something that- on its own- is enough for a small room- but- if combined with the 410- would round out the sound with more low end. the 410 wont fit in my car anyway- so i figure if i need more power- there will be other people involved- and they can lift it. i can push drums around with a hand cart or something.

the eden 210xst neo would be perfect- but the weight and price are unappealing. right now im looking at epifani/bergantino 210s and 112s- as well as the schroeder 1210l. theres an epifani dealer fairly close- the rest i will have to hunt for to demo.

anyway- its reassuring to see all those playing through injury. im about 8 weeks out of surgery- miscrodiscectomy/laminectomy at l5- and am starting to get a feel of what things will be like with a normal level of activity. some things i wont miss- but i need bass to be there for me- it keeps me sane.

my back has given me issues on and off for a while as a result of too much retail sales work (read: being on my feet for 8+ hours each day on concrete floors) after college. i have never messed it up hauling gear, but it has given me issues on the gig from injuries sustained otherwise, so i sympathize with you. i use the hand truck to haul my gear and use a 'Comfort Strapp' even for my lightest basses. it's really helped with the back and shoulder issues.

Carvin BRX10.2NEO. I miss mine, am thinking about ordering another for this location. I can plug the car stereo into it when I move (that's the excuse I plan to use for NOT selling it at that time :D ).

geezer over 50 years old, broke my back in 2 places in 1983. Since then ANYTHING I did even tying shoes could cause bad sh*t. I use SVTs that weigh approx 85 pounds and cabs with 8x10s with wheels. I manage. You have to know how to lift and when to get help.

Yup I use a two wheeled cart and some Vicodone. I take my time and leave early.

downsize the rig, says i. are you playing gigs with a PA and monitors?

i find many times people are lugging ridiculously oversized gear for the venues they're playing. if you really must, ask the other dudes in the band to turn it down a bit and keep it down so you can get away with a bit less gear and save your health.

my father's had more problems with his back than i care to imagine. it's killing him. don't wank around when it comes to backs.

Boy, there sure are a lot of us walking wounded aren't there? Amazing.

Besides amp issues, remember too that it's important to be aware of your posture and the relative position & angles of your shoulders/hips/feet when you've got the bass strapped on. Try not to stand with your crotch further out than your shoulders. That's my particular struggle, always leading with my package. ;)

Oh yeah, avoid hard ash.

I'm 16. And I've got a heavy rig right now.
Warwick Xtreme 5.1 - 17 kg
Warwick 411 PRO cab - 41 kg
Warwick 115 PRO cab - 29 kg
(Google kg to lbs, people!)
I'm going to sell the Xtreme 5.1 and 115 PRO cab, tone and power is awesome. But my dad has a bad back, and I see how much trouble he has with it. I'm gonna get a Genz Benz shuttle 6.0 112. (Keeping my 411 PRO for the purpose of having a full rig =D ) With the 411 I can run 600w at 4 ohms but I can take the shuttle combo with me.

I study music/bass at high school, and I bring my bass at least once a week. I'll have to start having an amp at school to. Well, the school has an amp, but it's an ampeg combo, and it's not powerful enough all the time + I don't like it's tone to much (don't kill me conservative fender+ampeg guys)

The 6.0 will provide plenty of power and the portability I need, seing I don't have a car and can't legally drive it on my own for another two years. I see no trouble in bringing the shuttle on the bus :)

A 100-lb. 410? Seriously, bro - I wouldn't.

I'm 43 (is that young or old?) and in great shape but I want to stay that way. And so I don't have and don't want (except in that GAS way) anything bigger than a 210. Under the right circumstance (and I can't even imagine what those would be) I would stack three 210s. But usually a single 210 is fine. (I like 10s.) The average 810 weighs more than I do. Today I could dazzle my bandmates loading that thing in and out, but I would rather be able to do it, and not. I don't intend to get old very quickly, if I can help it. The world is full of bad***es with equally bad knees.

I just ordered a Rock N Roller cart, mini size. After looking at all types of handtrucks, I think for $96.00 shipped, it really is the best. I look forward to putting my two 1x12 30 pound cabinets on it, my duffle bag with amp head and wireless system, and my two bass guitar cases on top, and using the cool tie down straps, and just pushing my whole rig into a venue in one trip. That's been my goal for years, one trip in, one out. I can then also use it for all my photography gear when I need to do photo shoots.

Heck, it would be great on vacation too. Put the whole families luggage on it, tie it down, and go in one trip...

So for my bad back (40 yr old., 2 herniated discs, epidural shots this thursday...), I've switched to a 3 pound amp head, two small 30 pound cabinets, and this cart. Much, much better, and I've given up zero volume or tone.

Thanks, those look neat. Is a R2 big enough or should I go for a bigger size in case I order one? Does the tie down straps come with the product? I might station my bass rig on this system and just drag it from the house, to gig, and back to house for storage. Just need to figure out an interesting way to push it into my Honda CR-V...

I got the R6 model - 2nd from smallest. I emailed about the straps. I'm guessing they do not come with any of them.

I got the medium one figuring it's not too heavy, and still holds more than I'll ever put on it. Since you don't have to have both end pieces sticking up, if something goes a bit over, it won't matter. I just think they are the best designed for the type of stuff we haul.

Music123 has a 15% everything, and free shipping, so $96 out the door is a great deal. Plus did you see all the accessories for them? Shelves, stands, you name it. A very well thought out product I thought.

I bet once my bandmates see this thing, they will all buy one. Being guitarists, they have say more stuff than me. One guy brings 5 guitars, 1 4x12, 1 head, 1 big pedal board, one 76 key synth, one rack of synth modules, and a big 7-space guitar stand, plus a big bag of other stuff. It takes him 5 trips just to get in a place. From the look of the larger carts, one trip would be a real possibility.

If anyone has any experience with the Rock N Roller carts, please speak up!

I'll speak up!

I have the Mini R'nR cart and it's a great thing to have.
Yeah, they cost a bit, but are very well-made and perform.
They've made my load in/out a whole lot easier and more pleasant, that's for sure- Wish I had bought a size up, but mine works well for me as-is.

I also got their flex straps (bungees) as an accessory, and while they are high-priced, they're MUCH better than standard bungees, very wide with end hooks that do a great job of securing gear.
I load up my Wizzy 12, Neo-Pak and instrument on the cart, nothing in my hands or on my back, and roll happily into the club or studio. Very nice; highly recommended.
