How do you PREFER to AQUIRE basses? Simplified Version

I like to buy them new, especially customs, but I've gotten some great deals on used gear, too. So both.

I make the rounds of local music stores and pawn shops regularly. Have had some real good luck scoring some barely used beauties lately at good prices, including a Fender Ltd Edition American Standard PJ and a 2012 PDN Ltd Edition Stingray 4H.
I prefer to play a piece before I buy, but I did jump on a blemished Ric 4003S through MF that's a fabulous bass.
