Once people thought that diseases were caused by evil spirits. Now we know they are caused by bacteria and viruses. A virus is made up of molecules, which are made up of atoms, all of which are obeying the known laws of physics. Mystery solved, right? But wait ... all the atoms in the virus, and in my body, obey quantum physics. So they are particles with definite locations when we measure their locations, and they are probability waves when we aren't measuring them? They get entangled with each other and can "communicate" across vast distances instantly (not just faster than light, but instantly)?
Where does conscious experience come from? If I build a model of a brain, with all the electrical and chemical connections that a brain has, will it be conscious? How does that happen? That seems to occur outside and independently of the laws describing the physical components of a brain, yet here it is, I'm having conscious experience right now.
So how do I react to things I can't explain? With awe and humility.
I (personally) don't think concious thought is anything magical or overly special. Nor do I believe it happens outwith the physical components of the brain. But trying to understand why we have thought, by looking at the simplest electrochemical and biochemical reactions is like a more complex way of figuring out how Windows or OS X works by looking at an on-off switch.
Not going to claim to know anything beyond a tiny fraction of the field, but perspective is a difficult thing we have to try and maintain. Looking at the smallest properties (ie the quantum mechanical properties) of the brain is so massively complex that we cannot fully model or understand it as a singular entity, at this stage. The quantum mechanical properties of single subatomic particles is massively complex, applying it to atoms, molecules, organelles, cells, organs becomes exponentially complex. This is also why we have diffierent fields of research, quantum physics, classical physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physiology, psychology, sociology. They are all part of the same package, though looking at the world on a different scale, and as we progress, the boundaries between the fields slowly fad.
I do find the complexity humbling and awe inspiring, but also use it as a motivator to try and explain why things are what they are
