How do you record your bass?

Yeah, I've messed with that but I get nothing out of it.

I don't know what the layout is on your interface, but for me as long as I have my bass plugged into one of the mic preamps, with the "gain" set high enough for the signal light to go off when I play, the "mix" knob set fully counter-clockwise, and the "Level" knob turned up high enough to hear, I can always hear myself, with or without any software going.

I use my PC to record my bass. In order to properly get the signal into my computer, I use the cheapest USB soundcard that supports 24bit/44khz+ recording, which was the Lexicon Alpha soundcard.

It's pretty horrible (crashes alot, but it might be a problem with the electricity in my house or my PC's PSU) but it gets my bass' sound right.

Here is an example of my bass through an Ampeg SVT7-Pro DI out to the Lexicon and directly to the PC:

This right here. I plug it into the instrument with a 1/4" - 1/4" and then obviously to the computer. Never get a signal. Should I try 1/4" to XLR?

I have the correct buttons pushed, stereo and guitar.

It should be set to mono if you only have one input.

Input/playback volume control should be all the way to input (fully counter-clockwise), gain knob high enough for the green light to flash when you play, and output volume level high enough to hear.

Do you have your headphones connected directly to the interface?

No, could that be my issue? The headphones that is.

I also don't seem to even be able to get a signal at all with the input at any level.

The lack of a signal light seems like an issue to me.

If you're using the interface to record you want to route all audio to it, including plugging your headphones into its headphone jack. If you want to monitor through your speakers you can use this little plug adapter to plug the speakers into the RCA jacks of the interface: http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-3-5mm-...8&qid=1346877287&sr=8-2&keywords=rca+to+3.5mm

I record my bass with effects but without amp. Running bass through RB200 digitech and then into my Aardvark Q10, which is by now ancient. 8 channel 24 bit 96KHz and direct in works fine for bass, acoustic, and for electric fiddle (used the direct out from trace elliot amp. Headphone amp with multiple outs to allow monitoring, and that's the ticket to traxking.

Thank you so much for your help and advice. I got it working. Seems there was an issue with my computer not recognising and the headphones being dead. I can now practise songs without bass and play my own lines! Next purchase is a Tech-21 for better sound. I even got my 31-band EQ going through the box since I don't like digital EQ's.

Awesome! Glad I could help.

I've used everything from the cheapest DI on the market to amp emulation boxes to the best mics and preamps on the market. It's all good in their own ways. I'm not a big fan of plain vanilla solid state DI's, but I've used them and made them sound good in the past. My favorite by far, though, is using the REDDI Tube DI unless I'm using heavy distortion, and then I like to mic a cab. But I also like dirt pedals into the REDDI, especially because it's not always practical to mic a blaringly loud overdriven amp rig at 3 am. The only thing I truly hate, though, is plugging directly into a computer interface that has no preamp. Zero balls.

Yeah I really want a REDDI. I'll get one some day when I can justify the expense.

"A DI good enough for JimmyM is a DI good enough for anybody". :D
