How does someone get BANNED from TB??

I find this forum and forums like it aren't really very good places to express yourself. I know that makes life easier for the operators but it seems a bit strange given that it should be full of artistic people. I mean, I know we're bass players, but we're still creative right?

For me popular music is ALL ABOUT commenting on society. Good pop music anyway. It seems oddly dissonant that it's not acceptable to do that where musicians meet.

I'm not sure of the correlation between self expression and being a jerk. Most of the rule pretty much boil down to don't be a jerk, with the exception of no cursing. Sometimes it's appropriate. Sometimes it's just a really good idea.

But, what are ya gonna do?

I'm just curious what someone has to do to actually get 86'd from Talkbass! I saw a post where someone said Jeff Berlin was banned. I know he's an opinionated guy but banned?

I think Jeff acted as if the rules didn't apply to him ...

I don't know. I guess I am just used to debate, and I think it's a healthy thing, and I think expressing opinions leads to shared knowledge and understanding. Maybe most people don't think that way.

I don't know. Disagreeing with the majority (or disagreeing with one particularly authoritarian mod) can be seen as 'being a jerk'. Which is a bit poopie.

Disagreeing with the majority doesn't make someone wrong. It just makes them unwelcome. I think making differing opinions unwelcome is a bad thing. If you can argue with those people you can at least understand what informed their opinion, maybe some people will change their opinions (although most are too proud), but either way at least you get to a position of understanding - assuming the correspondents aren't idiots - rather than just a rule-enforced begrudging acceptance.

It just doesn't seem very musicianly to me.

I got banned for playing my P bass without flats and a tortoise shell pickguard (see avatar) I also kept the tone control dimed.

Considering my semi-rural coordinates along county roads, I'm more in danger of getting banned by letting a flattened tortoise play my P bass.
