How does SX compare to Squier

I'm this close to pulling the trigger on an SX P Bass. I have a MIM Jazz that I bought cheap, and put all new hardware and electronics on. Unfortunately the neck is warped to hell, and no amount of setup will make this bass play right. I'm not wasting my time with this POS anymore.

I want the SX basically just for the wood. I've got all the hardware, and I'm going to sell my Jazz Quarter Pounders for a P pickup. I'm afraid that for 110 bucks, its going to feel like a toy. Squiers aren't bad, but I have played some that just feel cheap. I've got a friend who says that the SX he's played was absolutely the nicest piece of wood to ever come out of a Chinese factory. I just wish I could get my hands on one before I bought it. How do you think SX compares to Squier?

I want a sunburst, but not if they look as cheap as they do in the pictures. Anyone got a sunburst? How does it look?

Thanks alot

you're going to get a lot of bunk from folks for making this thread. just a heads-up...there's a million of these. i'll give ya the benefit of the doubt, though.

SX's are generally high quality, and still need a basic adjustment/setup and a good set of strings right out of the box. but they certainly don't feel like toys. the SX Jazz necks are even more substantial than those on your regular Fender. and to be perfectly honest, you may just want to hold on to the electronics and some of the hardware. i have an SX Jazz that i'm simply leaving stock, because the pickups sound so good, and the bridge does what it's supposed to.

now, compared to the current Squier Classic Vibe series, i'd have to give the edge to the Squiers. those are simply some of the best basses for the price to come down the line in...ever. they run about $300, and feel/play/sound like more upmarket Fenders. you pay more than you do for an SX, but you're getting something comparable to a US Fender in some respects.

but back to the SX thing...they certainly blow your garden variety Affinity or Standard series Squiers out of the water, and i think are far better than a regular MIM Fender. a good one might hold up against a Classic Vibe Squier. still, at the end of the day, SX's are fine instruments in any regard, but especially for the price.

How did the neck get warped? Did you try to adjust the truss rod yourself at any point?

Unless the truss rod is broken than anything is fixable.

The way you talk about it makes me think that perhaps you are not taking care of the bass properly. I could be off base and if so I apologize but if that is the case then get the SX and learn how to maintain a bass with it.

i own a sunburst SX Jazz :D i find that it feels nothing like a toy. the sound is just so damn nice (in a jazzy way) but i can still make it sound crunchy when i want.

also i find that the sunburst is a good look (i took the scratchplate off to look more like a rock bass.

hope this helps

They both have issues, but every bass at that price point is bound to have a few. SX has to do something about the finish on their necks. Squiers have fret problems. For $200 either bass will need some work.

Definitely not a toy - weight, neck dimensions & feel, tone, etc. very much like a traditional jazz bass.

compare to other models, apart from the classic vibes, i prefer SX than Squier, espacially 5 strings. i own SX 5 strings P bass with j/j pickups. the reason i choose because if you look closely at Squier 5 strings bass, their pickups are the same size as 4 strings pickups, which i never understand why. but if you compare with the CVs, i like CVs better.

I'm a pretty handy guy, I love to tinker. I learned to setup an instrument probably 6 months after I started playing. I've always been able to get a decent setup out of any instrument I've tried, but this one is impossible. I also want to add that I take great care of anything I own. You're lucky you didn't say that to my face :D

I actually bought the Jazz Bass used, and the previous owner really abused it. The neck on it is bowed so bad. I tried the truss rod, and even put a washer under the nut. The truss rod is currently maxed out, with the washer, and there is still way too much relief. The frets are worn bad. The screws in my straplocks keep pulling out, no amount of toothpicks and glue is fixing it. I supposed I could dowel it, but at this point I'm not wasting my time with it anymore.

I went ahead and bought the P Bass, btw. I can't wait till it gets here.
