How effective are Bass traps for room accostics?

I've used the Primeacoustic panels. It's a simple sheet of hard rockwool or similar material covered in fabric. What your paying for is really the mounting hardware and the nice bevels on the panels.
Their take on a corner trap is just a big sheet with a cavity behind and it works pretty well.
I used their London 12 pkg for a 12 x 22 room treating one end where the console is and leaving the other end 'live' by just hanging some curtains.

A well designed bass trap is one thing, but I imagine whatever this company is was selling snake oil in a fancy box.

Agreed. Show me some accurate measurements of pre and post installation of the aforementioned appliance box compared to pre and post installation of properly designed and installed bass traps. Most specifically a waterfall plot of the frequencies from about 20-300hz.

I had to do something about the bass sound in my 12x20 basement practice room. It was awful. #1 no brainer is bass traps in the front corners. You can build them cheap. I built 4 - 4 foot high units and stacked them. They 24x24x48 each and are filled with regular insulation. The covering is the cheapest black fabric I could buy. An electric stapler is your friend. Big difference. The next move is a couple of panels on each of the front side walls. I built 4x2x4" thick panels using John Mansville (814?) insulation. Its a rigid panel 2" thick and I layered it. The frames are made of 4 " metal framing studs with tek screws in the corners. The insulation is covered is the same type of fabric. This info all came from Gearslutz Invalid Link Removed
