The only thing it's essential to for me are my wirelesses. Otherwise forget it. Eric Johnson likes to use nearly dead Ray O Vac regular batteries in his overdrive pedal because he likes the sound. I am no Eric Johnson, nor do I expect to be playing with him anytime soon. However, if he wishes to do so, I'm free between Bowzer shows

Batteries are useless for me in everything I own except my active bass (but it has an active/passive switch in it for when the battery decides to die).

This...both of my basses are actives and I use rechargeables in them. Everything else is a daisy-chained wart-powered thingy. In the long run, power supplies are also cheaper.

Have an entire pedal board that works flawlessly without any batteries present.

I feel guilty every time I use one honestly, and if my bass didn't have an active preamp I'd be permanently rid of them musically.

I have a dunlop DC power brick. it powers all of my pedals. however its a lot to set up if I'm going to a friends house to jam. so to answer your question:
@gigs, band practice, etc-they are COMPLETELY useless.
@friends house-great unless they are dying.
and nothing sounds worse than a dying battery in a crybaby.

Eventually I'll have a passive bass. I even considered putting passive pickups in my Thumb.
