How I make a cf neck

I find the trapezoidal neck profile both interesting and kinda humorous, because from Toone's diagrams, it looks like you just taper your neck width and thickness, and then run a 45° chamfer bit down the neck, and you're practically done. Seems like it would save a lot of work, overall. I'd have to play one to see just how comfortable it is. I like that he's tying in fanned-frets, though I note that he makes no mention of Ralph Novack.

It's not 45 deg all the way. The angle depends on the taper and thickness of the neck. The back flat part is same width all the way. On my neck the thickness is the same thru the neck and the neck tapers from 39mm nut to 54mm at 24th fret. The angle is different at 1st and 17th fret. Not difficult to make but not just 45 deg all the way.

Interesting. I'd still have to play one to see how it feels, but the idea warrants further thought.

After couple of weeks playing I like the profile even more. Very easy to play some things I found difficult with Moses neck. Left hand stays relaxed all the time. Perhaps due to construction this neck is very, very rigid and sustain and evennes of notes is something I've yet to find in my previous (about 25) necks. Maybe the profile helps to make it even more rigid, I don't know.

First I laminate the front of the neck, then trim the edges and laminate the back of the neck.

Ah - I see that now. I was too busy looking at the pictures. Is there a reason you laminated the flat side (front) under the fingerboard? Also when you laminated the front did it form a strong bond with the wood or just kind of stick to it?

I wanted to make a kind of a tubular cf skin around the core. When laminating I first brush the core with epoxy, let it soak into the wood and after that laminate the cf layers. I cut a short piece out of the heel of the neck and there was no way to separate wood and cf without breaking. Obeche is quite porous wood so it soaks epoxy well.

I know this is an old thread but im doing a status s2 build and was wondering where you got the fingerboard and carbon fiber since i cant find the fingerboard anywhere and i can only find carbon fiber stickers. And how many yards of carbon fiber did it take to do the neck?
