I'm in the 11-12k range.

I had hearing loss before I was a musician, from early childhood. I've never been in the upper reaches and playing loud music for years without protection I'm sure never helped. Of course, I don't know that its really gotten worse than it was, given the attenuation I already have.

Hmm. A similar situation with me...

I'm nearly 58 years old, and just tested out with an upper limit at about 12k - with a pair of ear buds plugged into a MacBook Pro. But like BurningSkies, I had hearing problems in early childhood, having been born with some congenital defects that required correction with surgery when I was about six years old. So it's just possible that I've never had a completely normal range of hearing - though I've passed every hearing test since childhood with flying colors.

I'm not sure everyone here has the right standard in mind. The majority of adults living in loud industrialized societies can't hear anything much above 16k - that's just normal, so there's no reason to be upset if you're not hearing 18k+. Also, the overwhelming majority of frequencies coming off the average rock band are below 10k, so it's not exactly going to ruin your life or musical career if you're scoring that even low. So everyone cheer up. :)

You're right. From a functional standpoint, the inability to hear super-high frequencies is practically meaningless.

Hey Scottkarch thanks for starting this thread, this is core stuff.
I'm 65 and I've been playing fairly loud music for almost 50 years. Luckily, in the last 20 years I've been playing more upright and the gigs have been at more reasonable volumes.
On the test I start to hear the tone at 14K. I know that my hearing loss is partly genetic and partly occupational. I think that It's just as important, if not more, to know in which frequencies your hearing dips and how far it dips. Having drop off in the 1-2K region (as I do) had my wife repeating most of what she said when I couldn't see her lips. If you're doing that you probably should see an Audiologist. You'll be surprised how much easier things will get.
 
I'm 50 and my hearing is average (12khz according to the test) but I am able to hear ultrasonic bug repellers - the kind you stick in the ground. My brother-in-law has them and I can tell every time they turn on. It doesn't sound like a normal high pitch sound, it's more of a weird grindy groan so I suspect it's some kind of second harmonic resonance in my ear canal.

Seeing as ultrasonic insect repellents don't work, it I would bet the manufacturers make them to produce a tone that people can hear so they can think they are working.

TL;DR
Without headphones on a medium-range tablet with a dog whistle app, so not scientific at all. I'll do the test with headphones on a computer sometime. I know there's some loss happening though. Not only did I always play in very loud bands, I also had huge systems in my first cars.
 
Wow. Old thread. So,wine was using the search function. :) What I noticed when I started listening to the test is that I'd make the volume really loud and stop the test once I could hear something. But my later tests I'd make sure I had the volume at a level that the rest of the lower tones were not painfully loud.

I may have noted 16k or whatever, but I think I'm down -10 or way more at 16k. When I set my volume baseline to be the midrange tones at a reasonable volume, the high frequency would drop off and I'd stop hearing the high freq even earlier. Bummer.
