Ok I was sitting here at the computer and was looking at basses and came across basses with the dark body finish with the 2 light colored lines going down the body through the pick ups and to the bridge.example being the carvin with walnut bodys with two strips of another wood like flame maple. i was just wondering how that was done. is it just a lamanate top or is it 3 to for diffrent peaces of wood pushed and glued together?

Edit: also Im getting a Bass built for me and was wondering how Walnut sounded, I've played mainly Hard Maple bodys. Do they sound quite the same or a little diffrent.

this is a neck out of different woods glued together and then body wings with a dark top glued onto the neck

but if u look at Les Claypool's basses its wider then the neck. Is it still just a the wood from the neck through?

i think in that case it's another laminate between neck and body wings

So its neck through then two lighter wood peaces, then the dark body wings glued together...right?

Those are two flame maple strips that were laminated together with the walnut. The maple is through the body and is visible on the back of the bass. I believe Carl Thompson glues his necks in, so the walnut middle/maple stripes are not an extension of the neck.

They were put together during the process of creating the body.

I'm struggling to explain it very well. I only took a full year of woods in high-school.

take a plank of wood - cut it down the narrowest side i.e a 2x4x6 becomes two planks of 1x4x6 each. then lay them side by side along the edge you just cut so that the grain seems to be comming out of the seem.
stick this over the bass, cut it to shape and you've got it.

thats a bookmatched laminate top.

well, think of a book and how it folds. That is sort of the way they cut the wood. They take a single chunk of wood (usually figured or burl) and cut two thin pieces from it. They take those two pieces flip one so that they flow or look very balanced. I am sure someone will post a picture. You'll get it once you see it.
