Well - I meet bass players (and other musicians) all the time - so I have been to Jazz Summerschool for the last 5 or 6 years and I go to Jazz classes at my local Uni. At the former I usually meet about a dozen new bass players and chat to them during the day and in the bar in the evening. So - there's always loads to talk about - what music they/we are doing, how different Jazz is to play, from other types of music etc etc.
At Jazz classes and Jazz jams I meet quite a few over the coure of a year.
I have no problems talking to bass players!
