Bought a bass I had played about 3 years ago on Wednesday. Did a setup on Thursday. Gigged it on Friday.

Then again, my last few basses have been Laklands, so I'm already used to that neck - otherwise, I'd spend some time playing it before I take it to the stage - I don't need any surprises!

Every 5 fretted string I've owned I gigged immedietly. 4 strings for me are a little different because the 4 string I have now is setup in bead and I didn't have time to set it up before the first gig that came up. I've also never gigged with the fretless basses I owned. Nothing against fretless. But fretless was more of a hobby for me.
I'm a four string player, so as long as it was a four, and the setup was to my liking, I would gig it right away. When I went to a five for a few years, I did a fair amount if shedding before it left the stable to gig with me.
Yeah, I know I pretty much ending up with "my sound" no matter what I'm playing because I always gravitate to it.
My old man loves to buy gear (he has quite literally owned more equipment than the majority of music stores over the years) and he always gets insulted when he shows me his new toys and I say "yep, it sounds like you!" He can make the same sound with a Les Paul through a DS1 into a old Peavey Bandit as he does with a Tele through a Tube Screamer into his vintage Super Reverb. He even dabbled with a Fuzz Face he got in a trade and STILL made it sound the same. It's both impressive and funny. Except for the Hofner with flats, all my guitar playing band-mates complain I have too trebly a sound, but sound-guys and musicians in the audience always compliment me on my sound - because I've learned that you need a bit of that clank to not disappear in the mix. On stage it IS kinda awful - but out front it's REAL nice.
P.S. When I say "Literally" I ACTUALLY mean LITERALLY, not the way that people use it to mean "figuratively" these days. It seems to me that of ALL words, LITERALLY should be the one which gets used exclusively in its literal sense.

I don't wait for the bass so much as I do the strings. Once I put my strings on a new one, a couple hours of rigorous play and I'm good to go.
I'd usually take time to bond a little but had this happen once-
I set up a deal and brought my Dano longhorn to my gig to sell to a friend. Simultaneously arranged it so my drummer delivered the JJ longhorn I'd recently bought at a store near him to same gig. Had only previously played it for brief inspection, maybe 5 minutes a few weeks prior.
Tuned it up and it was great- the band was complimentary and sounded better than ever.

Depends. I've taken a bass straight to a gig after cash changed hands.
Alternately, i sat on my fretless for a few weeks before she made her debut.
Generally, if it has frets, i'll gig it as soon as possible.

I've pulled new basses out of the box and headed over for a recording session if they were well set up and intonated. Why wait?
Bass delivered on Thursday, gigged with it on Saturday. No problems. Got my "sound" immediately.
I picked up a fretless 6 string on the way to a gig, and that was the only bass I had with myself.
And it was my first fretless.
Yes, I am nucking futz.
(FWIW, I actually sounded pretty good from what I was told. )
