Did the school band thing too, so live performance wasn't the issue. I played guitar for 2 months in high school before my first gig. We did an Offspring song and a Tom Petty song. It was the typical passable gig, nothing special.
As far as bass, I picked it up in my mid 20's and was playing alone, or with just another guitar player for about 1.5 years. Then one day, another friend's band broke up (bass and guitar left). They asked my boy if he could sit in. He brought me along and the rest of the guys were like "wait, you can play bass? Why doesn't anyone know?". Next thing I know, I'm in a regionally touring band trying like hell to finish college. It was great fun to actually be learning to play the songs while playing full set shows. That was such a training session on listening, I could never buy lessons to teach me that.
