26 yrs

started playing gtar in '78, drums in ~'81, switched to bass ~'93 = 11 yrs on bass. but i seem to take a break from active playing every few years (when i get frustrated with the business side or personalities).

3 years...i really only played for the first 2.5...while i enjoyed, i never really practiced as hard as i could. For the past 3-6 months i've been trying to get in a good half hour of real practicing each day. Its almost a love it hate it thing. I want to progress but don't wanna work lol

I started playing with an actual electric on Christmas Day, December 25, 1975. That's when I started playing the bass my mother gave me for Christmas. The first song I learned was Donna Summers, "Love to Love You Baby." The first bassline I ever learned was "Heartbeat" by War ffrom their album, "Why Can't We Be Friends."

Considering my relative lack of accomplishment, I'm kind of embarrassed by my lack of development of the years.

Rush is probably the single most influencial reason I started playing the bass.

The first song I learned was Free Will, then I did Spirit of Radio.

My first bass was a no name J bass from Korea which had a tree trunk for a neck. It had a very high stiff action that could not really be lowered. Eventually I had a DiMarzio P pup installed. My first really quality bass was a beautiful light brown Rickenbacker 4000 (single bridge pickup). I kept that bass seven years and I have never seen one like it. I would shovel snow a solid year to get it back. I think its serial number was something like QD1465 (not sure, it's been nineteen years).

About a year, I'm nowhere near the ability of most here. For most of that time I felt like I really sucked bad, and I should just give up. But I didn't, and over the last few weeks, there's been a drastic improvement in my playing (at least from my point of view). I've been able to learn some basslines from some of my favorite bands pretty damn well, and I've even made a few of my own that are pretty funky in the last few days. I'm buying a recorder just so I don't forget them.

Started about the same time as Ed Fuqua in '71. Learning
R&R bass- Cream, Doors, Hendrix, etc.

Tried to learn DB in' 73 but gave up in '79. and quit playing
altogether in '79 to finish college& purse a career in the corporate jungle in '80.

The corporate jungle rejected me after '85 so I started up again & Alphonso Johnson, Patrice Rushen, & Ndugu Chancelor (some of my heros & heroines) encouraged me to keep on playing.

Got into the San Jose, Ca Blues scene about '92 and got tired of that in '99. So I started again on DB in '00. and didn't give up.
Now I play in 2 different jazz groups- part-time : the smooth & standards.
So:
'71 thru '79 = 8 years
'85 thru '91 = 6 years
'92-thru '04 = 12 years
Total: 26 years now I' m old man!!
