How long will it take to be able to play like this?

There is nothing wrong with learning to play any piece of music on bass as part of a solo repertoire. It can only improve your musicianship, IMO. However, would you want to play like that in an ensemble? Perhaps, perhaps not. There's no right or wrong in self expression.

I'll answer the OP's question if the OP can answer this one: How long is a piece of string?
Easy peasey: "About yay long."
I don't know the answer, but if someone else does I would also like to ask them how many licks it would take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.
Another straightforward question. Zen zee Answur isz zees: "As many as it takes."
It would take some people a long time, some people not so long.

Learn a few measures, see how long it takes, then multiply by the total number of measures.
This is more tragically flawed than a Greek play. Some measures will be easier to learn than others. If you measure a few "easy" measures, then it will take a lot longer than anticipated. Measure the time it takes to master a few of the toughest measures and you might just quit, cry or both.

How long is a Chinese person?
How long, or do you mean how tall? You need to be more specific... Cantonese or Shanghainese? North-East, near Harbin or Nor-West near Kashgar? Malay Chinese, Singaporean? Han or Hakka? You need to be more specific. Mongols or Miao? Yao or Yi? Yugur? Qiang or Chaoxian? Uzbek or Uygur? Maccanese or Min? Taiwanese or Tibetan? Just the tip of the iceberg...

OP... too many variables. It will take as long as it must take until you are satisfied with the results. :beaver:

I just spent some time listening to his recordings...about an hour's worth, and reading his interviews. I even subscribed to his Youtube channel, contrary to what my signature says, he's talented. Would I ever want to play a bass with piccolo strings? Not a chance. Do I respect him for what he can do with his bass? Absolutely!

It took him years to get to where he is now. He apparently started on cello for 10 years before moving to bass. He cites Michael Manring as his greatest influence, and has nearly a different alternate tuning for about everything.

What to take from all that? PRACTICE! It's all about practice. It's about learning scales, chord progressions, tapping, slapping, and some flamenco wouldn't hurt either. Learn how to utilize alternate tunings.

True. If someone is a complete dunce and too stupid to take this into consideration, it won't work. In the best case it would yield an extremely rough estimate at best. But the answer is no dumber than the question.
