How long will this last? ? ? pain from playing.

Try a little more gain on the amplifier and not picking so hard. Make sure you've got your bass set up with a comfortable action and take breaks.
When I was getting back into DB after some time off, I used Sweet Oil or Almond Oil on my fingertips (just a little) of my picking hand. Friction is what causes blisters, so it helps if you're minimizing it.
