By "regular bass string set" do you mean a standard 45-65-85-105 set? Because "how low" would depend on the gauge as well as the construction, such as the thickness of the core wire as well as the type (hex vs. round).

This is a relatively easy and SAFE experiment for you as it doesn't involve breaking strings. Go ahead and find out for yourself.

It's not (only) an intonation issue. You'll have to adjust the truss rod and action, as well as adjust your technique to accommodate for the lower tension. I wouldn't go beyond drop D on a 50-110 set.

Tuned the low E down a fourth on my fender 450 fa. Still sounds good.

I don’t change strings until one breaks. That could be five years. In the meantime I have no trouble tuning them and keeping a good tuning. In fact, the only time they don’t hold a tuning well is after I first put them on, if I don’t stretch them well first.

I can’t answer your question, but just wanted to warn you that if you tune the strings too low they will fall down onto the pickups and stick to the pickup poles.
