How many 'always on' pedals are in your chain

Seems like 3 is a popular choice. I guess I need to do some shopping because I was only thinking about using 2. :)
I'd say as many as you feel is necessary to achieve the tone you're looking for is adequate. For some the amp does all of the work; if you're going direct like I do that number varies quite a bit. I typically have 2 always on pedals, 1 being a compressor and the other being a preamp, whether that's a tube pre or something like the SV-Pre I'm currently using as my "amp" sound. On my country board it's just an API LLX preamp eq and a Collaboration Effects Compressor. So usually for me it's tone shaping and compression.

I have an always-on board that subtly sculpts my tone before hitting anything else (FOH, effects board, "clean" or dirty amps). It goes sFx MicroThumpinator, Doc Lloyd PDR, (currently undetermined boost/saturator), LBA 2020s, CTC Locomotive, Noble. For now.

Old setup:

-Broughton HPF/LPF
-Providence Bass Boot Comp
-Sushi Box Finally tube DI
-EHX Silencer gate

New Headrush setup:

-HPF/LPF patch
-compressor patch (some rigs have compression at start AND end of chain)
-B7k emulator patch (as clean preamp for main rig, various stages of grit for other rigs)
-built in gate on input settings
-Sushi Box Finally (it's too good to stash away!)

Broughton HPF LPF.

Compressor, one of these for my 3 setups, Broughton Omnicomp, Empress Bass Comp, Diamond Bass Comp EQ.

I try to keep my tone pedals off, and work on optimizing the essentials. Passive Fenders > compressor > HPF LPF > Traynor amplifiers.

My tone pedals are Broughton SVpre, Broughton Scorpion, SolidGoldFX BetaV. Presently I'm needlessly GASing for Origin Effects pedals and the Broughton EDTI.

Normally three:

OvniFX Smoothie
Broughton HPF
My weird preamp/DI box prototype... or a Sushibox Underground Accelerator. Preamp choice is dictated by my whimsical nature.
