How many bass rigs do you have?

I tend to like to have matching amps and cabs and because of this I have found myself sitting on 4 rigs right now. Mesa, Fender, Laney and GK rigs. Completely unnecessary and any of them would be just fine for anything that I do but variety is the spice of life eh? If I HAD to keep just one it would be the Fender rig for sure. That all tube goodness is way too nice to pass up and I have the 610 cab for bigger gigs.

I've got 3 heads and 3 cabs, it makes 9 rigs because I can plug any head in any cab :)

Markbass LMIII (used mainly for gigs)
GK MB200 (used mainly for rehearsals or low volume gigs)
Rack Rig: BBE BMax>Alto power amp (Spare if the other amps fail, is my backup)

Eden 2x12 (used mainly for gigs)
2 GK Neo 112's (used maily for gigs)
Peavey Headliner 112 (used for rehearsals and gigs)
Ampeg PB110 (rarely used but only for rehearsals or extremely low volume gigs)

That's some nice gear you have. I have never been motivated, nor could afford, to have matching heads and cabs.

I would choose the combination that sounded the best, keeping some redundancy and flexibility. For most of us the weight and size matters as well.

There's no reason to put aesthetics ahead of your sound.
I took some delight in turning up with a weird combination and surprising the expectations of some onlookers.

When a few members of my group play for the kids in UCLA/Mattel Children's Hospital, I use a custom made gypsy jazz style 22.5" scale bass uke and a Blackstar Fly 3 Duo mini bass amp I wear.

When my group of 35 ukulele players get together every other Sunday and Wednesday, I use one of my Hadean 21" violin/Hofner style bass ukes with a Phil Jones Bass Double Four, and at times will add a second one patched together, both on batteries.

For bigger or outdoor gigs, like the Culver City Screenland 5K on Sunday, March 10, 2024, I use one of my Hadean bass ukes and a Carvin MB15 combo amp, and if I want an even bigger sound, I add a matching Carvin 115MBE cabinet with an eight hour powerbank battery.

For recording my bass to the tracks the leader of the group sends me, I have a Focusrite Scarlett Solo plugged into my MacStudio.

  • Ampeg Venture V3 300w head with one or two TC Electronics BC208 cabs (2x8”, 200w, 8 ohms each)
  • Ampeg V4-BH 100w (all tube) head with an Avatar B210 cab (2x10”, 500w, 4 ohms)
  • MarkBass MicroMark combo (1x8”, 45w, 60w with ext cab)
  • MarkBass CMD-121P combo (1x12”, 300w, 500w with ext cab)

The Ampeg Venture rig is my medium volume amp. It might be redundant with the MB 1x12” combo, but I love the sound and portability of this rig.

The MicroMark is my acoustic gig amp. I’ve played a ton of shows with just this amp.

The CMD-121P is a great portable loud amp, just too useful to sell.

The V4-BH rig doesn’t tend to leave the house.
