All my basses are 4 string, and passive (except the Rob Allens, which technically are active due to the piezos). I've had active basses and I've never fallen in love with them.

34" scale: a P with flats (maple board, the only one in my collection), 2 Rics with nickel rounds, and a fretless Rob Allen.

30" scale: 2 Danos (one fretted with nickel rounds, one fretless with Thomastic flats - it's a little beast), a Hofner with flats, a Ric with flats (this gets a lot of play), and a fretless Rob Allen.

And an upright. Fretless, with flats. (ha)

If I had to cut it down to one electric bass: the Ric 4001 with rounds, because I just love the neck and it is way more versatile than people think. (Even with the goofy bridge mute assembly.) The "one bass to rule them" runner-up would be a fretted P with nickel rounds (like Artobass), which I don't currently have in the stable.
