How many basses are too many?

currently have more than 20 but the plan it to shrink it to 9 and stay there ( have a few in the for sale section). just keep the ones you cant live without

You can have as many basses as you can afford and play (in "reasonable" rotation). 
When you have enough that you don't know how many you have and start misplacing them, then you'll understand.
Too many is when you cannot afford the maintenance or string costs for all of your basses.
It all depends on how much you can spend on your bass hobby, which is limited by your other costs.

Well, personally I can justify having all the basses I currently own.
By that I mean there's a reasonably defensible explanation for why I have each one and why I need it (or something very much like it) for the music that I make.
But I'm also right at the tipping point: I can honestly acknowledge that any more basses would not be so easily justified ...at least not unless I got a dramatically different gig that made an unusual demand on the sort of sound or style I needed to play.
So I guess what I'm saying is, I know I now have enough.
Which doesn't mean I wouldn't want more...

Everyone is different. Some play more than others and others gig regularly. For my level of playing, 2-3 max.

Walk into your local Guitar Center. You should have more good basses than they do. You should have less total basses than they do.
tough question, and it's difficult to answer, except: you know it when you see it!
i would have to see your collection --- and then i could tell you! i could also tell you which axes you should get rid of ('donate' to others).

If you have to express the number of basses you have in scientific notation, then you have to many basses.
