How Many Basses?

Finally down to 2. A Ken Smith BMT Elite 5 and a Fender American Deluxe Precision. I've been through a ton of basses over the last 2-3 years and I think I'm finally happy. Plus the fact that buying/selling basses these days is a losing proposition.

Including my upright, I've got 8. And I'm not a pro!
Is that too much...no! Enough, yes! But do I still want other basses, yes!
I play them all, but I'm at a point where if a get another one, I've got to make sure it is different enough from the others to get some playing.

I certainly don't think that there's such a thing as too many but me, personally I have one. It's all I need and it does the job just fine.

Three.. a fretted J-style, a fretted P-bass and a fretless with an MM pickup. No redundancy. I play 'em all.

I have and try to rotate my 6 basses. I don't play my Fender modern player Jazz as much though.

Thought I would chime in with everybody. Consider this good therapy,for the addiction concept? I have 4 myself. 2 G&L L2000's, 1 2013 MM Classic Sabre,reissue,and 1 Peavey T20(sentimental). I manage to play them all,and love them all. Plan on selling one of the L2000's.

Fender Jazz '71 RI; Fender P '74 RI. Epiphone Jack Casady Signature; Epiphone EB-3; Fender Cabronita. Mostly play the JC and the Fender's, but I do use the EB-3 often enough!

Four, and I play three regularly. For the most part, they each have a particular role/vibe, but I've used all of them (except the fretless which is fairly new) for a variety of different types of musical and playing situations.

• passive fretted 4-string PJ, flatwounds: ol' skool thumpin'
• active/passive fretted 5-string "modern" J, roundwounds: versatility
• passive fretless 4-string w/ single MM pickup, roundwounds: well, for when I want fretless (use this one a bit more for when I hack away at jazz)
• active fretted 5-string ATK, roundwounds (well-spent $200!): lives in my day job office and gets used on occasion for last minute rehearsal, etc., brings the rawk \m/

I tend to be of the mind that players should have the instruments they want provided that they aren't driving themselves into debt and aren't raising hackles in the household because of all the basses lying about. (Although, it's nice to dream that some folks with tons of basses might choose on occasion to buy an instrument for a local kids music program or some such nonsense instead of just continually adding to the "arsenal" -- or donate one they don't use a lot if the proceeds from a sale aren't needed.)

As for me, I'm currently sitting at about twenty, with offers pending on a few more. I say about twenty, because a few are in various stages of being built and/or rebuilt.

Yes...though some more often than others.

is there such a thing as too many basses?

Not without further defining the context of that question.

i.e., there's definitely such a thing as "too many basses to fit in a Volkswagen Jetta" or "too many basses to be able to spend equal time playing them all within the span of a single 90 minute practice session"
But it's a lot harder to say whether there's such a thing as "too many basses for a member of TalkBass to own" or "too many basses on the wall at the local Guitar Center"

Context is king.
