How many Bassists use no pedals?

So when is a pedal not a pedal ?
I have started to follow the Sushi Box Thread and his pedals might be a clean tube preamp in one pedal and a Tube DI in another pedal.
If your pedal is a reproduction of a known amps pre-amp is it still classed as a pedal ? If I stick that pedal into a rack mount case and move the pots to the front panel is it no longer a pedal but a rack pre-amp instead ?
Some pedals are just a much much smaller version of that massive rig your pop's were hauling around back in the good old days.

I love FX on my bass - in the studio.

I almost always run a tc tuner pedal live which doubles as a handy mute for my electric basses.

Like another TB’er above, I carry a Boss Bass EQ for my upright and passive fender on louder gigs.

Since I posted this I’ve acquired a nice compressor, funky phaser, 80s style chorus, HPF, and even a small board & power supply.

I’ve been taking individual gizmos out occasionally to see how I feel about them but have yet to link ‘em all up and do the thing.

I still find the straight bass / cable / amp setup quite satisfying and I guess I’m just afraid to introduce a bunch of troubleshooting points into my working professional endeavor.

I’d like to think I’m a smarty pants minimalist but I may just be a dumb old curmudgeon.

So I guess you haven't tried a Sushi Box pedal yet ? The MORE pedal is very moorish i believe.
Just be careful, I think they might be addictive.

I have a Stomp. I use it for basically 4 things. Compression. "Noble" model. Chorus on like 3 songs. Pitch Shift on maybe 8 songs. I could give up the chorus and MAYBE the compression as I have a tube DI that gives a little of that. The pitch Shift is really becoming a must have. It's so nice to not have to worry which bass I have on when a tune comes up or get called out of the blue that is in Eb. If I didn't need that, I'd be even more cable to DI.

This thread is back so here's the latest iteration. I guess some would still consider the first two pedals as not pedals, which is silly.

HPF only. Have built-in compressor and chorus on amp, though rarely use them.

I’ve never used pedals on a gig. I either plug straight into my Aguilar TH500, or one of the preamps in my rack.
