It's funny, these XTenders are probably the only piece of gear that an overwhelming majority of bassists agree is a useful, quality product. Hipshot must be making a killing on these! I think I would have named them something different like DropRockers though.

How many here use HipShot D-Tuners?

Got one on my Spector NS-2J (bolt-on)...LOVE IT... I engage mid song sometimes.. Works like a charm when set properly.

My Reggie Hamilton sig STD Jazz has one. I don't use it much, but it works well & I do use it sometimes. I also have a 'Ray 5 so I USUALLY use that when things LOW are needed. But it is handy & I do use it on a cuppla songs. YEARS ago I used to tune my E string down sometimes when we had a song in 'D' & we wanted a LOW D eg.

I have one on my Ken Lawrence 4 string. I play in a celtic rock band with a lot of fiddle tunes that are in D so it gets a lot of use.
I've just bought a 5er so I'll see if that will take away my need to have the Hipshot on my 4.
I don't feel any difference on the E string between the original tuner and the Hipshot.

I have one which I bought when they first came out (I think) back in about 82. It is on my Fender P-Special and I use it quite a lot. I have 6 basses and gig 5 of them. The Sadowski is a studio bass mostly. No bar gigs for that baby. I almost always take the p-Bass to a gig unless I know I need the 5 sting. Would like to update the other four 4-strings to D-Tuners. One of them Hipshot doesn't yet make a unit for and that one I am replacing ALL the tuners with Hip Shots asap. It is my fretless and is a Squier with crappy tuners. HipShot rocks!
I had one on my p-bass 4 string because I was in a band that was doing a lot of drop D tuning and it was great.
According to the site:
BT-2 = Drop tune your USA '67-'82 Fender P & J Bass.
BT3 = Drop tune your pre-CBS Fender equipped with reverse winding Kluson tuning machines
Pretty much the different models are "drop in" for different basses/key manufacturers.
I too have one extender for each bass... and to the person who mentioned the different feel for the extender vs. original keys, I tend to switch out the other three keys for Hipshot regular keys (ie not detuners). Should solve that issue.
It's kool to see that so many kats dig the Hipshot D-Tuner. I have been using them years and I find them to be very valuable tool.
I have something that some of you might find interesting.
Hipshot made me a Double D-Tuner. It's a D-Tuner that allows me to drop the E and A string at the same time with the flip of one lever.
And yes I am a Hipshot endorser.

Thanks for the disclosure, but it wouldn't matter to me either way since I'm already a believer.
I had few basses with it, I found out on my copies they did not function as nice as you guys make it sound here. Now I have a specific bass for Drop D if the situation calls, besides it takes 2 seconds to drop down to D for a song, if you change in between songs then I guess it would make sense.
I have it on my G&L L2000 and planning to get one for my stingray, very useful, solid and the most important.. accurate
1. at one time i thought they were useful, but having to remember that all the notes on the "E" string were moved two frets higher messed me up too much. It was nice to have a low D, since anything below low E sounds so thunderous. It was 'cool,' though, but not my thing anymore.

For me, they're a must on four strings. That low D comes in a lot of handy, especially at the flip of a switch.

Very. In my original band, Theorem, there are a couple of; songs that I like to play in standard tuning but for the Chorus or bridge or what ever, I'll flip the lever mid song.
Currently, my 2 main 4's. a VAlenti J4 and a Sadowsky NYC J4.
