The irony is that after the suicide it is very difficult to ask for clarifications, though, in the case of the cartoon featured, it may not be an issue.
I saw a bass player with one of those......in 1969 with a Kustom 3 15" amp and cab, haven't seen one since, the guy was good, played the bass solo from Take me for a little While- Vanilla Fudge which impressed the hell out of me. Tim Bogert is/was a monster.

I have a 1963 P...had it since 1967.
It's a nice bass, lighter than most P-basses.
It's not a grail. It's a good bass. I usually play other basses out, mainly because they are short scale and sound every bit as good.
If it were lost, would I pay for a replacement? Not a chance. They're not worth their inflated market prices from a playability or value point of view. Their worth is inflated by old boomers like me who think they are cool. They're nice but not special.

Probably a sum of its parts (the chrome + the perfect tort + the perfect burst) but I'm always amazed at how much more pleasing to the eyes these old Jazzes are compared to modern offerings. The angles are just so right on. Thanks for sharing, really awe inspiring!...one of my dad's basses... he's the original owner of this '61 Jazz bass. I've had the honor to play it a number of times. It lives up to it's reputation.

I had a '63 Precision, but I sold it quickly to pay for my my 1956 (birth year) bass. I just figured I'd have a lot LESS of a chance of ever finding a '56 again.
If a custom shop of the pre-CBS era counts, I have a 1960 Journeyman Relic Jazz.

Live music is so awesome. I actually played a dance gig last Saturday with my drummer friend who I went to China with on a 6 piece band tour in '94.
He put this gig together and he is 92 years old! Wow.

My 1964 Jazz bass: I had it refinished and EMG's installed when I bought it in about '82. Not one of my most intelligent decisions in retrospect.

Words of advice if the OP decides to take the plunge into a preCBS. Like any bass, not all are the holy grail. In fact some can be real dogs. If you can't get yours hands on it to play before purchasing then buy from someone that will give you at least a 24 hour approval. That's a lot of money to be rolling the dice on.
My early 2000's Jazz Identifies itself as a pre cbs Fender jazz and have to respect that.
