I want straplocks bad, dob't use em currently.
What do you have to do to insrall them? And are the ones EB make any good?

How many TBers don't use straplocks?

I won't gig a bass without straplocks, but I have a few that don't have them. The ones without just never see the stage.
Several folks have said here that it only took one disaster or near disaster to make them believers in straplocks. My experience was the opposite--it took only one near disaster to make me stop using them.
I had just slung on my bass and snapped the straplocks (Dunlop) into place. I was in a bit of a hurry, and I thought the upper lock clicked into place, but apparently it didn't. Since I had just taken my left hand off the neck, I managed to catch it with no damage done. This was certainly a user mistake, but hey, users make mistakes. OK, maybe I make more than my share.
I do maintain my strap pins and screws, and I use good solid straps. I also use Grolsch bottle gaskets except on my Kinal Kompact. The end pin on that one is also the jack, and it calls for a bigger hole in the strap. I modified one to fit tight, and I leave it on. I don't get acrobatic when I play, and my basses feel very secure. To remove a strap, I have to sit down and work with it for a few seconds.
Not trying to change anyone's mind, just offering a perspective. No straplocks for me (unless you count the beer-bottle gaskets).

I use this set up on my main gigging Jazz bass...I'm in a punk band...it works...

I dont use straplocks, however I do use locking straps.....

Am surprised no one has mentioned the Comfort Strapp <http://www.comfortstrapp.com>. You double over the ends of the straps (see image below) and get pretty much the same benefit as a true strap lock. Been using them on all my basses and guitars for over 10 years now and never had a malfunction. There's another thread that mentions them <http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=519170> and most but not all people seem happy with them from a comfort perspective too.

i just apply crazy glue to the screw and use a washer to keep the strap from sliping over the head of the screw.
I don't use straplocks on any of my basses.. I like the idea, but for some reason I can't get over screwing something into my beautiful instruments that wasn't there in the first place. I worry about opening the holes too much, or not being able to go back. I mean, it's wood right? Isn't there a lifespan to those holes?

I just used the Dimarzio straps with the clips. Had them on all my guitars for 10+ years of shredding with metal bands. And when I switched to bass several years ago I got several 3" ones for my B.C. Rich and Ibanez. NEVER had a single issue with them, and never had to worry about them coming undone.

I fashioned some "straplocks" out of beer bottle caps for my guits, but I have never had them on my basses. For a long time I was switching straps around, so I never made it permanent on my thunda sticks.
i've had problems with dunlop screws pulling out, never had that problem with my schallers, but the nut that holds my schallers on comes loose, a little lock-tite and problem solved.. a tiny dab of gorilla glue on the end of the screw before you put it in makes sure it never comes out
If I use them at all, it's the simple Dunlops. I usually only have them on the upper strp button, and only about half of my basses. I don't toss basses around while playing, and I do check strap buttons every now and then.
I have used Schallers on my last few basses. One set of Dunlops but I didn't like how far they stuck out as well as a bad experience with their screws.
I originally went with strap locks because I dropped my Fender Jazz one time. Luckily I caught her before she hit anything, but the strap locks went on soon after. I just couldn't stand the thought of getting a ding on her when I had kept her in like new condition for almost 14 years.
