How much Amp power do you need?

So if I have an amp rated 900W at 4 ohms, and 2 8ohm, 300W 12's running through it...Would that be too much power in your opinion? I'd only be able to use 1/2 the amps power effectively you would say?

I bought a 3,000 watt amp and a Pre for what it would have cost me to buy a 500 watt micro based on the same pre. Sure its a little bigger and heavier, but still very manageable when set next to my tube amp.

Doesnt mean I am any louder with either of those, than with my "Practice Micro".

But then, one of the reasons I moved from a 500w micro to a high power amp was because I was being limited by the 500w micro. I'm not necessarily louder, but at the volume I was trying to get with the small amp I was also getting low end compression and some breakup in the mids. I don't get those things now as I have so much more headroom.

There is a reason my 500w micro is a practice amp, and doenst make it out live with me often. It is hard to argue with the open low end you get with a LOT of head room.

I keep mine in a shoulder bag and carry it as a spare on important gigs...I did use it live, and could still but what it does to the lows gets to me pretty quick and I hate to hear breakup in the mids.
