I've been happy with several different tones I've used since I returned to playing in 2002, and I've ditched some gear for reasons other than sound. For example, I loved my SWR Goliath III 4x10 cab, but wanted to go lighter. So I've moved to G-K Neo 112 cabs, which IMO sound better anyway. I also loved the tones produced by my DiPinto Belvedere semi-hollow, but disliked the long reach to first position, so I've sold it and use Fender and G&L basses exclusively.

So, after a bunch of basses and a couple of rigs, I've settled on a couple of set-ups that never fail: (a) either Jazz bass or G&L SB-2 through (b) G-K 700RB-II or MB-500 with lots of "boost" dialed in, and (c) G-K Neo 112 cabs. With the Jazz basses, I typically roll off the bridge pickup a bit for maximum, bottom heavy growl. The G-K riggage is ideal for this IMO.

Yeah, same here. I had several nice amps over the years (Ampeg, Fender, GK), but when I got a Mesa/Boogie 400+, it really put me over the top. Same with basses; I started off on P-bass copies, then a P-Bass, then a Jazz, then a 4001, then a few active Ibanez basses, then paydirt: an '80 Stingray. I guess the nice thing about going through so many basses and amps is once I figured out how to sound like I wanted to, I could pretty much sound 'my' way on anything.

My tone is basicly this.....

2006 MIA Fender P-Bass... I can get thump, and the agressive sounds I like... but I do miss the OLP Singray copy I had... was a 5 string, Tony Levin signature.... :(

Amp wise I have a Ampeg B200R

Effects a Zoom B1

I play in the worship group at my church and just on my own... I get get old scool thum right on up to Billy Sheehan distorted growl... just about ;o)

I spent the last 8 years going through amps and basses to find the right ones to help bring out the tone I was looking for. I landed on Warwick and Mesa but I still couldn't quite hit the sound I had in mind right on the head until I got my hands on an Avalon 737. It was like 8 years of searching solved with the flip of a power button!

Addition is such an ugly thing. I avoid it.

I am totally happy with my current 3 basses. "Tone" changes from day to day and mood to mood - the trick is having an instrument that either changes with you or can gently pull you back into something that works. I'm getting ready to ditch some effects pedals as I'm happier with what my bass and fingers really sound like. Just a couple of toys to give me some colors that I want to paint with...or spill all over the bandstand in a mess.

That's not a lot if you think of it... and my "sig-tone" i can get it almost automagicly in every Amp/PA
that's why I care more for the bass itself rather than the amp I play trough... I would dare reveal a secret here..... I don't own a bass amp :O

but I guess I'll have to get one, one of this days... hope I don't spend a lot :smug:

$60,000.00 and 43 years of tone research. messing around, buying this, selling that, cruising for a while with what I had and starting all over again, listening to CDs, tearing and rebuilding basses here and there and finally I put some Bart xxM56c pups in my #122 Clement with volume / volume / tone passive configuration and 2 switches to tap south / north single coils and dual coil modes. That is it!!! I am finally there.
