Double Bass How much difference does tension make?

Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss. My entire life I’ve just played whatever steel string was available. Then the internet/TB comes along and makes me question everything. Two part inquiry. 1. Will lower tension help my increasing left hand pain? And 2. Will they lessen the stress on an old Juzek with taped up seams, a caved top and a bulge in the back from the sound post? I know it will need professional help, but until I can sell a major organ, I’m looking for short term advice.

... And yes.

I'm a big proponent of saving hands by using low tension strings. And they are also gentler on the double bass. But, as the tension goes down, often the action needs to go up, and also for tone and volume the sound post may need to be (slightly) longer and/or location adjusted.

There are lots of strings to choose from.
