on my above post that was how much i was going to be paying for lessons. but went to my first lesson and i blew the guy outta the water. So.. no more lessons.,,.. and i didnt even have ta pay.

I charge 5 bucks for this kid thats just learning, up until i could make his mom stop paying me. It's fun as heck to see someone just as excited about learning on the bass as i was. I'm not a SUPER DUPER FAN FAB U TASTIC Bassist, but i'm just teaching him the basics, He's a dead begginer, i had to show him what the e a d and g strings were. I'm teaching him Standerd Notation and tab, some thorey, and freeing his mind with diffrent "Thoughts" on music, diffirent ways to aproch it in ways he never thought before. Also, when i do teach newbies, i always let them learn a song they have always liked by useing tab, teach it to them, then they are all siked that they can at least play a song they like, not "Hot Cross Buns". Then, ask him why the bass player did this and that, and examine the song from a writeing stand point.... IT'S THE FUNNIST THING IVE EVER DONE.
I am paying $72 for 4 30-minute Bass Guitar lessons.
Boring at first, but getting better now. He wanted me to start learning to read sheet music for the first 6 months and I stopped him cold. Being a computer guy, I asked him if he could type since he uses his computer alot for music and such. He said no, he was a hunt & peck typist. I immediately told him that he should STOP using and enjoying the computer and taking shortcuts (such as running programs and using the mouse). He should concentrate on learning to type instead. And only until he has learned to type 60+ WPM, should he begin really using and enjoying his computer.
He understood the analogy perfectly. Turns out that you really can use a computer and be productive without having to know what "pre-fetch cycles" are or type real fast or know Pivot Tables. Same with the guitar, you don't "need" to read sheet music to use the guitar and become productive.
It sure is nice to know those things (on both the computer and music side), but they are not necessary.
The lessons are much more fun now for both of us!

$210 / semester. That's what they would cost at school. That'd be 2 30min sessions twice a week for about 3 months total. And I'm gonna do it again. Best dang instruction/inspiration I've ever gotten.

$30 hr, I think whatever you charge the market in your area has to bear it, and you need the skills to justify the price

Just for perspective, the trainers at the Gold's Gym where I work out charge an average of $60 an hour. So I don't think $40 an hour for bass lessons is out of line, especially if it is someone as distinguished as a bass player for Vic Wooten. He would HAVE to be good...and hopefully he can teach well also.
Wow! $40 or $70 a lesson! That seems insane from where I am, but maybe lessons just cost more in general on the coasts, or big cities.
I take lessons from a guy who has a Doctorate in Bass (DB) from the New England Conservatory and also went to Berkley for $25/hour.
Lessons from a guy with a doctorate from North Texas who is a professor at Missouri University for $32.00/hour. (Not bass lessons)
Lessons from a Grammy nominated bassist for FREE!
And finally lessons from a bass player with who's played bass on numerous jazz albums for $15/hour (I know alot of guys here have played on albums to)

I have lessons with Steve Lawson (from TBs ask a pro forum). I pay just around £35 for a two hour lesson... that's about $70 at a guess.
I travel from Reading to London (about 40 miles) by train so Steve keeps the cost down to balance against my travel.
Steve is an excellent teacher and I think that's a total bargain. (Hopefully he wont read this or the price will probably go up! )

)i pay about $17 per hour. assuming i am sometimes taking extra lessons on week days, i am a bit lucky around here?
i charge $20 an hour, and i don't consider myself a very good teacher.
but i have students so....
only lessons i've ever really TAKEN were from Richard Davis from Sep 2000 until last month. no idea how much that cost tho, it was included in my tuition.

As howard says I charge 34 pounds for a two hour lesson, or 19 for an hour, which is about $52/$27 respectively - WELL below even what the MU in the UK state as a minimum... why? because when I was a kid, the education authority in London provided poor kids with free music lessons, but they don't any more, so music is in danger of becoming some kind of purely middle-class pursuit... so as much as I'd love to charge on a means tested basis, asking people how much they earn before answering the question 'how much do you charge?' would seem a little strange, so I keep it pretty low.
...having said that, it's been 19/34 for a long time... time to round up those figures to 20/35 methinks...

I pay 65 a month for my 7 year olds piano lessons. Every monday 1/2 hour each. That's reasonable considering that around here three bedroom houses with a leaky roof go for around $350,000. In other words this is a very expensive area
Im my neck of the woods it runs from $50.00-$60.00 per month. That is for one half hour session per week(4 per month).That is for both guitar and bass,whatever your poison.
