We usually meet up at someone's apartment/hotel room and drink a few beers before the gig. Maybe a shot of whiskey or two, but we try to stay off the hard stuff before the gig. We drink enough so that everyone loosens up. I like to be buzzed when I go on stage. Not blind drunk, just feeling it. Usually a beer or three per set, and all the hard liquor I can afford after the gig.
I don't like to be hammered when I play though. Not because I play and poopier than when I'm sober (we jump/mosh/run around a lot on stage so a few mistakes are bound to happen), but because I don't like the feeling of not being able to concentrate properly on playing because I have to focus on keeping my balance
