How much speaker for a doom two piece? Bass and drums

I mean, if I had Cisneros money my roadies would do the moving;)
I like to joke about using 2 215 cabs stacked up shoulder/ear-height here a lot. Part of being in an originals band is being below Blue Collar- being a No Collar mover & driver for short 30-70 minute sets. Suffering for a whole 40-300 seconds of bringing your cabs in and then 40-300 seconds bringing them back out is part of the art and you're taking a shortcut if you sensibly use a handtruck.

Working in most genres, a key feature of the art performance is literally-unhealthy Sound Pressure Levels. A key feature of Doom is totally obscene SPL's- the kind that'll have many club owners tell you to cut it in half unless all of your fans are buying whole bottles of the most marked-up booze in the house and emptying the whole beer stash.

You could try to have low stage volume and just use a Rumble 100 combo and let the PA do the Dooming (maybe paint a few sheets of plywood up to be fake Marshall/Sunn/Ampeg stacks for the stage?), but then you'd have to already be best buds with the club owner to get them to tell the sound guy to Doom it up till the cops come.

By going to non-obscene SPL with a non-huge cab stack and typical unknown-band PA support, you'd be doing Diet Doom, Doom-Lite, or just Melancholy. Garage-Doom? Doom-Garage?

Tinnitus sucks, but getting your art compromised sucks also.

Good luck figuring it out and be safe.

I agree on the Hartke.

I must disagree, from experience, on the following.

  • Old Mesa/BOOGIE 215; abso-freakin-lutely.
  • Modern Mesa 215; I cant stress enough just how polar opposite these cabs are when directly compared to the Mesa of old. Completely different tone philosophy. Andy will probably agree and has stated words to that effect, that the Subway cabs are not aggressively voiced in any way.
...just trying to help someone from going down what would be a quite expensive path, coming from someone who has tried it.

What happened to Marv?

I saw it coming three pages into his J Plate Overlapping The Guard thread a few days ago and thought about PM'ing him a heads up that talking like we're just men in the garage, drinking beer & burning a J with no kids or women around is gonna get him the Ban Hammer and he ought to tone it down to, at worst, how an eighth grader talks around the cool moms & dads… then I didn't. I feel bad.

Predictably he got spicier & more combative.

Why do you feel bad? You really think anything anyone said would've "saved" him this time?

No reason at all to feel bad, imo. He's the one acting the fool, by the sound of it.
And hey, some guys don't wanna be around that talk in the garage, either! :D
