How much speaker for a doom two piece? Bass and drums

Looking at getting a newfangled lightweight cab for my doom project.

• I'm running 500 watts
• I'm not competing with guitars
• Looking for a single cab setup at 4 ohm (non modular)
• Will have pa support on larger gigs
• Want enough volume to peel paint when needed.
• Absolutely Under 100 lbs, but under 60 is better

I am currently looking at
Barefaced Supertwin or 310
Mesa subway 212 or 215
Revsound 212xt

Please advise / offer up suggestions

Those cabs are the OPPOSITE of what I would ever envision for doom.

Those are some of the most polite inoffensive invisible cabs made today.

You need an aggressive old-school bone-rattling cab.

An old Mesa Diesel. An old Peavey 215. Something along those lines. Punishing.

Everything will be heavy, though.

But, if you're into doom, carry the weight.

It ain't Lawrence Welk.

Mobility issues preclude heavy gear.
Current cab is 98lbs and far too damn heavy.
The difficulty of this question is the impetus for posting on the forum, to garner input from a larger pool of players with experience of the cabs listed.

If tone is not a concern, the ability to take the punishment of doom is.

You don't want a modern, polite, flat-response cab.

Agedhorse himself will tell you modern Subway cabs are NOT aggressively voiced.

For lightweight, while also being able to reproduce some aggressive doomy mids, I would look at the lightweight Hydrive Hartke cabs, the HL series:

I have a looooong history of very aggressive, very distorted loud bass tones.

A pair of HL115s would do the trick. Turn the tweeters off.

Seriously consider the Barefaced cabs. The head man Alex is very good at suggesting cabs based on your amp and your needs. Barefaced Audio Loudspeakers

Just remember..."hi-fi" is the opposite of doom.

Keep that in mind when looking at modern bass cabs.

I dunno man. I like vintage gear as much as the next guy and I realize it's part of the vibe for doom but my Subway 115 has zero problem getting great doom tones w/ a good fuzz pedal.

IMHO:

I suggest getting a cab rated for more power than the amp...so >500W. This is to reduce the chance of destroying the cab when you go berserk.

The second criteria is how loud the cab will play with available power. The spec you need is sensitivity, expressed as the SPL measured at 1 meter when 1 Watt is applied.

It should look something like this:

Sensitivity = 100dB 1W/1m​

To get calculated SPL, add the decibel change that occurs when the power is raised from 1W to 500W:

Decibel Change 1-500W = [Log(500) x 10] = ~27dB

Calculated SPL = 100dB + 27dB = 127dB

127dB is pretty loud.

FYI, when you double power, we assume the decibel change is 3dB

1W to 2W = +3dB
500W to 1000W = +3dB

So to get 130dB, you either need 1000 Watts or you need a cab with a 103dB 1W/1m sensitivity rating.

Calculated SPL [Log(1000) x 10] + 100 = 130dB

or​

Calculated SPL [Log(500) x 10] + 103 = 130dB

Estimates based on sensitivity ratings are sort of ballpark because the way they are derived has not been standardized. Although these specs are somewhat useful, they are not 100% predictive.

For doom I think you will want to avoid tweeters.

Any examples of two piece doom bands like that? I'm planning to put together similar project just to do a few basement shows here and there.

I like doom but I'm not super familiar with the genre. It's really more of an excuse to use all my gear and playing something very different than I typically play.

I'll be running a fearful 12/12/6, should be more than enough.
