There is also something to say for improvising the stuff you can't hear well. It doesn't have to be note for note. 95% of the people you play to will never know the difference. As long as your having fun so will they.
I get if it's a I have to figure it out thing but honestly I think I came up with some pretty good stuff that way. Then when I went to play with other people just to jam, if they started playing a song I didn't know but had heard enough I could do something with it.
I liken it to following Google maps when I'm away for vacation. I try to ween myself off it so I can figure out where I'm going on my own. If I follow Google exclusively I will never learn my way around. Besides I always have it as a backup if I need it.
