How Often do You Clean Your Umbilicus?

Recently upon exiting the shower I came to realize there was a preponderance of some buildup in my navel. I will admit that I am not the most disciplined cleaner of my navel, and I have never had proper instruction. I was wondering if you have any cleaning regimen and if you can provide me with any more information regarding this buildup and proper care of the navel?
