Pretty frequently. I had the unpleasant experience of catching a nail on a string once. The string stronger than my nail.

How often do you cut and trim fingernails?

My nails grow really fast, and they are thick. Like toenails. I have to trim them every three days, or they start zinging on the strings. The big Revlon concave trimmers are the best I've found so far; you can find them at Wal Mart.
Stop trimming your wife immediately.

Years ago I used to like to play guitar fingerstyle like Gordon Lightfoot or Justin Hayward, but when I finally realized I was never going to get any good at it I cut my nails and committed exclusively to a pick. Now that I'm a bass player I still cut my nails on a regular basis - about every 7 to 10 days - so they won't get too long and catch in the strings. And I still play guitar exclusively with a pick.
The instant my nails start to catch on a string with a normal pluck, they get trimmed. Usually, that means about every 8-10 days.
Ok, I figured I was just a disgusting human being for having that mental debate with myself every week or so... Thanks for making me feel a little more normal!

Mine grow very quickly and I wind up clipping mine at least once a week. I clip them as soon as they start catching on the strings.
I go every three to four/five days, but I almost always file too. that way they get that shape and edge consistantly.. and I find sometimes if I file every two days I dont even need to trim as much.. reducing some clip time. (more maintenance though) I cant stand to have ANYTHING under my fingernails. and I used to cook too... trim/file > chew and bite. and in turn keep them looking much better overall than teeth/tear. but above all its very consistant. and easy once you get a system/pattern down.
I don't have a target length measured to 32nds of an inch, but I agree about growing the first two on the right hand long enough, but not too long, so I have some optional zing on reserve.

Yup. Finger nails are a great place for bacteria to grow. Salmonella, E. coli, etc. they'll all grow under the finger nails. Horrible thing for a cook to have long nails. Good on you for keeping 'em short.
Biting finger nails is a nasty habit too. It's a good way to get sick.
I cut mine once a week, BTW.
