How old are you?

I'm 38. Started playing music at 8 (guitar, hand drums and a bit of bass and a bit of flute). picked drums at 9. From about 17 played 3 nights a week until I was about 29, then stopped. picked up the bass again about a year and a half ago, and I'd love to be gig ready in the next 6 months

46, started twanging when I was around 12, but never got serious about it until 2007. Most of my life I was more of a bass collector than a serious player, outside of a few studio gigs backing up several recording artists that knew me. Then one day I decided I wanted to start playing more, and playing live. I found playing live an exhilarating experience and one that was much less pressure packed than being stuck in a studio with group of "already" pros who needed me to tighten up a few bass lines for their next recording while providing equipment and being a quasi guitar tech and psychoanalyst.

44. Started at 17. Played on and off for all this time. Mostly on.
During my off time also tried other instruments like piano, bouzouki and flute.

I'm a bass player at heart :)

Your situation is similar to mine in that you had a big gap of not playing from your late 20s to late 30s. If I'm not being too personal, I'm curious to know why.

From 2000 to 2012, I was living overseas and moving a lot and wasn't in one place for much longer than a year or two. I got married last year and have put down some roots so decided to get back into it. I'm in a band now and like you, I hope to be gig ready in the next few months. Rock on.

I will be 53 in a couple of months and have been playing for 35 years. However, I recently made the decision to retire from playing. Venues are not paying like they once did and I'm tired of band drama. You would think there would be less of it as you get older but it never seems to end. Too much work for too little reward. I'm done and have listed all of my gear for sale on CL.
