How small a rig can I use?

I tried once playing a pub with Kustom tube 12A on my upright. It's a cheap 12w guitar combo with 8" speaker and tube preamp, the box even had open back (weights about 3kg). The band was saxophone, bassclarinet, trombone, drums and me. To my surprise, the combo was almost satisfying. I had to cut off bass frequencies, since the speaker went distort on resonating tones. The lamp overtones made the sound hearable, though it sounded like 60's. I think if the box was smarter (closed and vented), it would work pretty fine.
