How strong are bass strings

If anyone has tuned the low E or A up an octave on a medium or long scale bass please share. On a short scale a 100 low E up an octave would have 120 pounds of tension.

Bass strings are still strings, and all strings break at some point. They are strong, until they aren't..

Just got a Fender bass. Let say a set of 100 to 45. I especially want to know how much it takes to break a 100 low E and 80 A string. I remember a user on here from years back did an experiment. He concluded that it took around 160 pounds to break. I think that's too high. Bass String Tension Chart Here is a tension chart I found. On average they around 40 pounds standard tuning. 160 would be about an octave higher. That's quadruple the tension

They are strong enough to make good music with when they are tuned to the pitch they were designed for.

Making music, I say. Making music!

Not pulling cars or weedeating or floating roof trusses or rigging line array speakers in arenas or securing ocean liners to their moorings, dammit…..

And if one is making music with bass strings tuned to within an inch of their life, it’s probably music I’m not interested in.

I grew up in the 60's/70'/80's but I never dropped any acid strong enough to even think of this or to dream it up.

Well of course it would take more than one string, a full set would hold you, but I would also recommend E's and B's for comfort.

Why ? did you stretch your wife's G-string ?

Liutaio Mottola Lutherie Information Website Bass low E is at 37% of breaking tension. Slightly more than even a standard acoustic low E at 32%. It will most likely break before you can tune it an octave higher.
