One more note - remember that the old blues masters did NOT agonize over whether they had string set A or B, or whether they had spruce or alder wood in their instruments. They were happy to be able to afford a guitar at all!! Although some of them could afford decent instruments, many of their guitars were little better than apple crates with necks and strings.
This is one reason that I have little patience with people's obsessive search for tone and endless fiddling with minor details. Just buy a decent guitar/bass and PLAY the damn thing. If they could do the work with the tools they had, so can we!!!!!!!!!!!!
